Luftwaffe Cargo Tag

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgThis is a Luftwaffe cargo tag. These were attached to crates before being loaded onto transport aircraft like the Ju-52. The colour and shape indicated weight (for balancing the load) as well as contents (for priority). These can be found by the thousands scattered all over Russia at ex-Luftwaffe airfields. This particular one came from Pitomnik Airfield in Stalingrad. If anyone tells you they are wound evacuation tags they are full of shit.

The colours and shapes follow this standard…

Red square tag – Heavy weight class – not fragile (20 Kgs. / 44 lbs.)
Yellow square tag – Medium weight class – not fragile (10 Kgs. / 22 lbs.)
White (Green?) square tag – Medium weight class – fragile (10 Kgs. / 22 lbs.)
Red round tag – Light weight class – not fragile (5 Kgs. / 11 lbs.)
Yellow round tag – Light weight class – fragile
White (Green?) round tag – Light weight class – extremely fragile
