This bayonet was manufactured for use with the M38 Carcano carbine. Effectively it is the same as this bayonet here but with the design simplified by removing the folding function. This example has been severely handled by someone to remove the blueing.
A few months ago I was finally able to get hold of a Czech VZ-24 with clear signs of German issue. I then went looking for the correct bayonet for it. The frog is marked for Friedrich Schäfer Ulm/Do. 1940. This bayonet has had its muzzle ring removed before reissue, a typical German standard.
This bayonet is the Yugoslav M1924/30 model, used by the Germans as the S109(j). It is intended to fit the M24 Mauser pattern rifle to be seen here. This one was manufactured by Vojno Technicki Zavod and has their triangular ricasso stamp with BT3 inside.
After picking up the M43 Mauser below I went looking for the correct bayonet for it. Interestingly the M43 has two bayonet lugs on it, one that will fit the standard M36 and M43 Spanish bayonet and the other to fit the M41 Bolo bayonet. I found a nice M41 matching to the sheath and bayonet and marked for the Fábrica de armas de Toledo factory.
Two things are driving me nuts lately. One, the lack of German guns falling into my lap. Two, my need to complete sets. I had a No4 Mk 1* Enfield and a No5 Mk 1. So since no Jerry guns were showing up I decided to get a No1 Mk3 SMLE Enfield. I like to put bayonet with rifle so here is a Lithgow made P1907 Enfield bayonet. MA stamped for Lithgow Small Arms Factory. The broad arrow for military acceptance. An X for a hardness test mark and a couple of inspector stamps.
This bayonet came with a Type 99 rifle I recently imported from Texas. The seller said that his father had brought it home from WW2, so it’s been with the rifle for 70 odd years. Stamped with the Kokura Arsenal mark, this is the early pattern with the curved quillon. I have other examples here, here and here. It appears I have too many Arisaka bayonets.
The Number 5 infantry carbine had a very short production run and basically came in too late to be taken into large-scale production. The impact on the number of bayonets produced for it was mirrored by this. There were four UK wartime manufacturers, one being Wilkinson Sword. The bayonet is marked on one side by the broad arrow and an x. The x is a bending proof mark. The other side of the blade is marked W.S.C. and with their dispersal code S294. Wilkinson made 188,354 of these bayonets.
Here is a tidy, later model Type 30 bayonet. Intended for fitting to either the Type 99 series of rifles or the Type 38, this one does not have the curled guard seen on the earlier examples like this one here. The stamp on the ricasso indicates that it was made by Toyada Jidou Shoki (Toyada Automatic Loomworks), now known as Toyota.
Surprisingly tough to find. These bayonets were manufactured by Simson in Austria for the MP-34 submachine gun. They were made from the Portuguese M1904 contract bayonet and supplied with the MP34 on the Portugal contract in 1942. Honestly, if you are down to a bayonet after emptying your MP34 then you are right up shit creek IMHO. Visually very similar to the 1904 bayonet, the key is the distance between the two fitting screws on the handle. Also note that the mannlicher M95 bayonet also fits this weapon. I have spent 5 years looking for one of these that wasn’t priced stupidly and EBay finally came through.
The Carcano M38 carbine was issued with a folding bayonet as seen here. The folding function was deemed a failure and the bayonet reverted to be fixed and issued with a sheath after a short time. It’s hard to find these live in the wild so I was thrilled (mildly) to see one drift past me and into my net.
This is a cool, totally impractical and typically Italian bit of kit. It is the short folding bayonet intended for the Carcano M38 Carbine. I really don’t understand what they were trying to achieve here, avoiding inventory that may be lost, making their troops faster to get stabby. Either way it was a failure, soon discarded. The Italian troops were universally poorly equipped, led and supplied. I do not fault them for surrendering at the first opportunity.
This bayonet is the correct one for any German G33/40 Mauser. The bayonet superficially looks similar to the one for the K98 however the blade edge is reversed and the ring has been machined off. These bayonets were manufactured by Brno between 1940 and 1942. This one is marked dot on the bayonet and dot42 on the sheath.
When I put a rifle back together I do my best to put the correct sling and bayonet with it, for completeness and to feed my OCD. A couple of months back I added a Carcano M91/41 rifle to the box and after a bit of searching, here’s the correct M1891 bayonet for it. A bit of a scrubber but I didn’t want to pay through the nose. This one is made by Terni.
This Austrian bayonet was originally made to fit the M1895 Steyr-Mannlicher infantry rifle. I am not a bayonet guy by any ways or means although I have a handful. I got it because it fits the MP34ö submachinegun that I own. The MP34ö was issued to Austrian forces and made its way in Wehrmacht use after the Anschluss. Most of the production was sold in a Portuguese contract and those MP’s were issued with a Simson & Co Söhn MP34 bayonet. The examples that stayed in Austrian service were fitted with an M95 bayonet like this one.
This is the Type-30 bayonet, designed to be used on the Type-38 and 99 rifles. In this case it is a late war version made from flat steel and unsharpened. The earlier examples of this bayonet are far better made, with blood gutters and a polished finish. The frog is here.
This is my field bayonet for the Mauser Kar98. It has a serial number 9544 stamped on the sheath and the bayonet.
