End of the War Novelty Panties

Posted in Toys with tags , , , on January 28, 2017 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_United_StatesIn the great tradition of “a serviceman and his backpay are soon parted” we bring you tiny novelty underwear. As the demobilisation of the US Forces got underway from September 1945 these troops, soldiers, sailors and airmen were shipped through a small number of West Coast ports on their way back through the system and ultimately home to civilian life. Along the way enterprising merchants attempted to siphon as much of the serviceman’s demob pay as possible and this little item is just one example of the methods they used. I find it kinda interesting because beyond the obvious puns being used here, it also plays to the fear of the cuckold and the “Dear John” letter that servicemen endured.

Flag_of_PakistanIn 1945 Bahawalpur, while part of the administration of British India, was still nominally independent, run by its Maharajah. In consequence it was never a British possession. After Independence in 1947-48 it became part of Pakistan. It’s rulers produced this Victory medal in 1945.

Hyderabad Victory Medal 1945

Posted in 1939-1945 Service Medals with tags , , , , on May 15, 2013 by The Dude

Flag_of_IndiaThis is one of the tougher to find Empire Victory Medals. This one was issued by the Princely State of Hyderabad to commemorate the victory over the Axis in 1945. Hyderabad was nominally independent and separate from India for a year after the partition in 1947. Some 3,200 of the silver Hyderabad 1945 Victory Medal were struck.

Commemorative Medallion for the Victory in WW2

Flag_of_AustraliaHere is a cheap and cheesy medallion knocked out locally in Australia around VE Day 1945. A unique piece of Australian history, this vintage token was handed out to Australian school children at the end of World War 2. Made of silvered copper by Stokes of Melbourne
