German 3.7x265B AA Round

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , on December 11, 2021 by The Dude

This piece of ordnance came as an Andrew dropping. It’s a 3.7cm HE round designed to be fired from the BK-3.7 aircraft cannon as fitted on HS129’s or Ju87-G’s. It was also used in a range of 3.7cm FlaK.18/36/37/43 auto cannons.

The fuse is a 3.7-cm KOPFZUENDER ZERL. PV self destroying timed type. On acceleration the igniferous detonator in the displaced recess sets back on the striker. The flash from the detonator passes through the flash channels to the powder pellet in the radial channel and to the lower end of the delay filling in the first of the vertical channels. When the pellet in the radial channel disintegrates the bolt is thrown out-wards by centrifugal force leaving the striker held off the detonator in the magazine by the creep action resulting from deceleration.

On impact the striker is driven in by the hammer and pierces the detonator in the top of the magazine. During flight, the burning of the delay composition in the first vertical channel is transmitted by the gunpowder in the traverse channel to the delay composition in the second vertical channel. When direct action does not occur before the composition burns to the base of the second channel, the disk of gunpowder confined in the top of the magazine adapter is ignited and explodes and thus initiates the detonation of the magazine.

The fuse was manufactured by BLW, that is Gritzner-Kayser AG in Karlsruhe-Durlach in 1943. The casing is marked as manufactured in 1940 for a Flak 18.

German Vehicle Ammunition Box for MG34/42

Posted in Magazines, Parts & Accessories with tags , , , , , on October 6, 2021 by The Dude

Nice simple item here. This is the ammunition box that was carried inside vehicles mounted with an MG34 or MG42, like the SdKfz 250/251 Halftracks. This is a nice early one dated 1939 and manufactured by Franke & Co GMBH, Machinenwerke in Leipzig.

Italian Carcano Ammunition Pouches

A pretty simple little bit of kit, these are a pair of green Italian made leather ammunition pouches for the Carcano infantry carbine. These date from pre-1943.

2 cm Flak 30/38/Flakvierling HE round

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , , on August 5, 2020 by The Dude

A fairly straightforward item here. I got this from Andrew so that I would have one round for the magazine I bought from him. This is an HE 20mm round for the 2 cm Flak 30/38/Flakvierling. It has the asr code for “HAK” Hanseatisches Kettenwerk in Hamburg-Langenhorn as well as the WaA271 inspection stamp for that factory. This example is from the Solothurn with yellow indicating HE and the red band indicating the filling, in this case, 94 grains P.E.T.N./Wax.

Arisaka Rear & Side Ammunition Pouches

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches with tags , , , on July 20, 2019 by The Dude

A fair while back I found a single front ammunition pouch for the Arisaka battle rifle. The standard issue was two front pouches and one rear one. The front pouches held 30 rounds and the rear one 60, for a full load of 120 rounds.

The rear pouch also houses a small oil bottle. Both of these came stinking of mothballs. I sat them outside for a couple of months and then soaked them in vinegar & water overnight. They still stink but not so much as to drive me out of my own house.

New Zealand 1905 Pattern Mounted Rifles Bandolier

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches with tags , , , on November 10, 2018 by The Dude

Flag_of_New_ZealandThis item, produced in 1942, is the 1905 pattern 50 round ammunition bandolier, issued to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles regiments. Unique to New Zealand, it was intended to provide additional ammunition in case of extended reconnaissance patrols and was popular because of the ability to sling these over the necks of the horses.

Canadian Made .303 Ammunition

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , on September 30, 2018 by The Dude

Flag_of_CanadaA few weeks ago I bought a sweet No5 Mk1infantry rifle. When I buy these things I try to make sure I get a small amount of period ammunition with them, just in case the urge overtakes me. This ammunition inner is Ball Mark VIIz ammunition loaded with nitrocelluose propellant. Manufactured byDefence Industries, part of Canadian Industries Ltd. The I.G. Canada means Inspector General Canada.

New Zealand Manufactured .303 Ammo

Flag_of_New_ZealandSimple little item, a ten round package of .303 rifle ammunition, intended for the Enfield infantry rifle and similar vintage weapons. This pack of ten is dated 1941 and manufactured by CAC, the Colonial Ammunition Company of New Zealand. This was the first ammunition company established in Australasia.

Japanese Arisaka Front Ammo Pouch

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches with tags , , , on May 12, 2018 by The Dude

Flag_of_Japan.svgDifficult to find in good condition as Japanese leather didn’t last and the environment in which they were used wasn’t healthy for leather. This is the front ammunition pouch for Arisaka 6.5 and 7.7 ammunition as used in the Type 38 and Type 99 infantry rifles. This one came to me still with a cardboard liner and 6×6.5mm stripper clips.

Japanese 8mm Pistol Ammunition Cartons

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches, Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , , on November 10, 2017 by The Dude

Flag_of_Japan.svgThese two cartons arrived in the mail today, all the way from the U.S. I expect you won’t be that excited by them but finding unopened cartons of wartime Japanese Nambu ammunition is almost unobtainium. Getting them into Canada from the States is a painful experience as any ammunition export from the US requires Department of the Interior approval. These two cartons are marked almost identically. The star marking is for the Tokyo First Arsenal. The first line of characters is “ju-yon-nen-shiki-ken-ju-jip-po”  which translates to “Type 14 Handgun Ammunition”. The second row is “ju-go-hatsu” meaning “15 rounds”. On the underneath of the cartons are the stamps for “sho” meaning Showa Year and 19.11, which translates to November 1944. These are perfect for my 1944 Type 14 Pistol here and fit into the front pocket of the 1944 holster I have here.

German Granatwerfer 34 8cm Mortar Bomb

Posted in Mortars with tags , , , , on June 29, 2017 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgPretty standard but hard to find this size in Canada. This is the 8cm mortar projectile for the GrW34. It’s marked for blw 42, meaning it was manufactured in 1942 by Gritzner-Kayzer AG in Karlsrühe. It is obviously ground-dug but will make a great candidate for a restore.

Italian Carcano 7.35mm Ammunition

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , , on April 16, 2017 by The Dude

Flag_of_Italy_(1861-1946)The other day I bought a Carcano Model 38 Carbine in 7.35×51 calibre. When I get these rifles I try to get just a small quantity of representative ammunition for them. Here are two slightly different issues of the 18 round carton for this rifle. The first is manufactured by SMI, Società Metallurgica Italiana in 1939, the second by Sezione Pirotechnico R.E. in Bologna, also in 1939. This round was introduced because of feedback saying the 6.5 Carcano round performed poorly in Abyssinia in 1936. Typically the Italians screwed up and actually made this projectile lighter than the one it was to replace.

Nambu Type-14 Magazines

Posted in Magazines with tags , , , , , on March 1, 2017 by The Dude

Flag_of_Japan.svgI understand, from my friend Andrew, that importing is a slippery slope. If so, I just fell down it. I have a Japanese Nambu Type-14 pistol coming from the States and while I wait I have been gathering the bits and pieces to put together a full kit.

In this case we have two magazines made by the Toriimatsu arsenal. I also found 44 rounds of wartime ammo, no headstamp which I am told is correct.

Mauser K98 Ammunition Pouches

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgHere’s something I had forgotten to post, an unmatched but similar pair of ammunition pouches for the Mauser K98k service rifle. Note the difference in the rear loop as well as the metal internal stiffener.

Hungarian 8×56 Stripper Clips

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , on November 24, 2016 by The Dude

32px-Flag_of_Hungary_1940.svgThis round was used specially by the Hungarians in their Steyr M95 infantry carbines such as this one here. This cartridge has a much more prominent rim on it than the Austrian round so if you find that your ammo is dropping out of the clips check that you may have confused the two, I did!

Italian Breda 30 LMG Stripper Clip

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , , on November 24, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_Italy_(1861-1946) Another bit of kit I’ll never get to use. The Italian M30 Breda Light Machinegun fired Carcano 6.5×52 rounds just like the standard Italian military rifles of the time. This is a stripper clip designed to refill the horizontally fed magazines for this gun.It holds 20 rounds.

Enfield 303 British Stripper Clips & Battlepack

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , , , on November 24, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_CanadaI have a Canadian made Enfield No4 MkI* rifle here. These are the stripper clips and ammunition for this rifle. Additionally you can see a battle pack of 48 rounds produced by the Dominion Industries Company, part of Canadian Industries Ltd. The ammunition in the battlepack is all VIIz ball, made in 1943. The clips show both brass rounds and steel, made in 1944 and 1945 by the same company.

Italian Carcano 6.5×52 Stripper Clips

Flag_of_Italy_(1861-1946)Another small addition to my ammunition stock. These are stripper clips in Carcano 6.5×52 intended for the Carcano M91/41 service rifle as well as the Carcano M38 and other small arms. These fit this rifle here. Interesting side note, Lee Harvey Oswald put two of these into JFK in November 1963.

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgA modest little item here, this is a stripper clip for the 7.92×33 “Kurz” cartridge used in the MP-43/44 assault rifle. Really tough to find this ammo now and especially in the clip. Thanks Andrew!

Arisaka 7.7mm Ammunition

Posted in Ammunition & Fusing with tags , , on October 22, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_Japan.svgA pretty simple item here, a clip of Arisaka 7.7mm rifle ammunition. This was used in the Arisaka Type-99 rifle here. Since I just obtained one of these rifles I was happy to get hold of some representative ammo for it.

MP28/II Magazine Pouch

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches with tags , , , , , , on May 22, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgA few weeks back I hooked an MP28/II submachine pistol. Just after that I was lucky enough to find a magazine pouch produced for the same weapon. When I accumulate these things I do my best to get the appropriate pouches, sling, magazines and bayonets for them all. It’s part of the joy of having OCD. This pouch is marked Otto Sindel, Berlin, 1935.

K43 Magazine

Posted in Magazines with tags , , , , , , on March 1, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgThis is a late war production K43 marked magazine for the K43 semi-automatic main battle rifle. The manufacturer is gcb (Grohmann und Sohn Ad, Metallwarenfabrik, Würbenthal/Süd). The magazine has the two correct WaAB92 stamps along the lower part of the body as well as the simplified two ridge floor plate. This is for use on my K43 rebuild here.

K43 Magazine Pouch

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgHere is a great pair of 1944 dated K43 magazine pouches. These are stamped ROS44 on the inside the left pouch and correspond to Type 11a on Claus Espeholt’s site. These are made from rubberised canvas. The ros code is presumed to be E.G.Leuner, Bautzen.

MP-18 Trommel Adapter

Posted in Magazines, Parts & Accessories with tags , , , , , , on February 24, 2016 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgThis little item is terrifically tough to find. It’s the adapter for the MP-18/I designed to allow the 32 round drum magazine (snail drums) to fit. Not quite WW2 but since I have a trommel drum and I am looking for an MP-18, it’s a case of hook it when you see it. The MP18 was originally designed with a  20 round box magazine however the Army procurement organization insisted that the weapon be made compatible with the TM08 trommels which were common due to their issue for the LP08 pistol. This required this spacer adapter to be slid onto the snail drum to prevent it being pushed to far into the receiver of the MP18.

Flare Gun Ammunition Pouch

Posted in Ammo & Magazine Pouches, Flares and Flareguns with tags , , , , on December 14, 2014 by The Dude

Flag_of_the_NSDAP_(1920–1945).svgThis German ersatz leather pouch is designed to carry the flare rounds for 27mm flare pistols such as the LP42. The manufacturer in this case is FSX41, which is code for the Albin Scholle Lederwarenfabrik in Zeitz. These pouches are identical to the postwar VOPOS ones so you have to be careful when you go hunting. All the ones I have seen to date seem to be manufactured by the same company and stamped FSX.
